How to Clean a Sofa and Upholstery at Home

Technician cleaning a dark fabric sofa with upholstery equipment

You sit on your sofa every day, and it shows. Body oils, dust, crumbs and pet dander build up in fabric. Cleaning upholstery is not hard, but the wrong product can leave water rings or damage the fabric, so start by checking the label.

Step 1: Check the cleaning code

Look for a tag under a cushion or on the frame. The codes generally mean:

  • W: water-based cleaners are safe.
  • S: use solvent-based (water-free) cleaners only.
  • W/S: either water-based or solvent-based cleaners are safe.
  • X: vacuum only; no liquid cleaners. Hire a professional for deeper cleaning.

Step 2: Vacuum thoroughly

Remove cushions and vacuum every surface, seams and crevices with the upholstery attachment. Brush stiff fabric lightly to loosen debris. Vacuum the frame and under the cushions too.

Step 3: Spot test

Apply a small amount of your cleaning solution to a hidden area, such as the back or underside. Wait until it dries to check for color change or staining.

Step 4: Clean spots and stains

  1. Blot spills right away; do not rub.
  2. For W or W/S fabrics, mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water, dampen a white cloth with the suds (not the water) and blot the stain from the outside in.
  3. For S fabrics, use a dry-cleaning solvent following the product directions and ventilate the room.
  4. Blot with a clean cloth dampened with plain water, then dry with a towel.

Step 5: Deodorize

Sprinkle baking soda over the sofa, let it sit for several hours (or overnight) and vacuum thoroughly. Open windows to freshen the room.

Step 6: Let it dry completely

Use fans and open windows, and avoid sitting until the fabric is dry to prevent mildew and watermarks. Fluff cushions and rotate them for even wear.

Leather and microfiber

  • Leather: dust or vacuum, wipe with a slightly damp cloth, use a leather cleaner and conditioner. Avoid soaking.
  • Microfiber: often an S or W/S code; brush when dry to restore the nap.

How often should you clean upholstery?

Vacuum weekly, spot clean spills right away and schedule a deep clean once a year, or more often with pets, kids or allergies.

When to call a professional

  • Large or old stains, pet urine or strong odors
  • Delicate fabrics or an X cleaning code
  • Sectionals, dining chairs and office seating in volume
  • Moving in or out, or after a renovation

Our upholstery cleaning process starts with fabric testing, then vacuuming, stain treatment, deep cleaning with steam or low-moisture methods and optional fabric protection.

Frequently asked questions

What does the S code on a sofa mean?

It means solvent-based cleaners only. Water-based products can damage the fabric.

Can I steam clean my couch?

Only if the fabric code allows water (W or W/S). Check the tag, and when in doubt, test first or hire a professional.
